Music Business Intelligence (#MBI): Careers In Music Business PART 1

There are so many careers in music business. As an artist, you need to understand those careers so as to know how to engage the expertise of such professionals.
We will be considering some careers.

PERSONAL MANAGER (OR ARTIST MANAGER, AGENT):

Personal managers represent one or more musical groups or artists and oversee all aspects of act’s career. They deal with and advise the artist on all business decisions. As well as many of the creative decisions an artist must make, and attempt to guide the artist’s rise to the top.

BOOKING AGENT (OR TALENT AGENT)

Booking agent works to secure performance engagements for musical artist and groups. They work to find talent to book and may be involved with developing the talent toward a goal. They must possess good communication skills to sell talent and develop contact in the music industry.

They often work closely with an artist’s manager and may be involved in setting the fee negotiating with promoters. A booking agent is paid a percentage of the negotiated fee for an artist’s performance.
Let me stop with these two for now.

One of the challenges in the industry is that many of us have mastered the art and the act of singing but, we have no clue of the business angle.

Engaging an artist manager or a Booking Agent gives you more time as an artist to master your art. There is division of labor in economics; it is also applicable to music. You actually cannot be an expert in everything.

Understanding your strengths and your weaknesses will really take you far. It gives you the opportunity to concentrate on your strengths and the privilege to engage some experts to make up for your weaknesses.
